Dr. Richard Kirkham and Neil Bourne take a deep dive into how industry has been affected by Brexit and Covid-19, and discuss the paths
to recovery. The University of Manchester, UK, has been working with colleagues in the Thomas Ashton Institute (a collaboration with The Health and Safety Executive Science Division) to characterise the impact of the pandemic on the construction sector. Their study, Keeping the UK Building Safely is one of several projects commissioned by the Covid-19 Core National Studies programme led by Sir Patrick Vallance.  This article draws on this work to highlight the practical challenges facing the sector in the transition to a full ‘reopening’ of the UK economy.
